Elizabeth’s weight gain began in college when she became increasingly sedentary, a problem that only intensified when she started dating a partner who also led a sedentary lifestyle. Together, they frequently ordered delivery meals—pizzas, burrito bowls, cheeseburgers, and fries—and rarely cooked, pushing Elizabeth’s weight to 270 lbs. In 2016, driven by a desire for change, she started a diet and managed to lose 60 lbs. However, feeling guilty that her MBA candidate-boyfriend had to fend for himself, she ended up regaining the weight.

The turning point came in late 2021, five years into her relationship, when her boyfriend admitted his feelings for someone else. This confession was a wake-up call for Elizabeth.

“At that point, I realized, ‘This is cheating, this is dumb, I can’t do this anymore,’ and I decided to leave,” she said.

After breaking up with him, Elizabeth moved out of their shared apartment and started a new job. The upheaval was daunting, but it provided the fresh start she needed to commit to losing weight permanently. “I literally got rid of every excuse I’ve ever had,” she explained.

Elizabeth discovered the keto diet in January 2022. The combination of structured meal planning and keto’s low-carb approach was transformative. Reflecting on her journey, Elizabeth feels she’s truly come into her own. “I think I’m more myself now, funnily enough, than I ever was in the previous 30 years,” she remarked. “I say yes to things now, I’m more outgoing, I’m more likely to be social.”
